St. Michael Lutheran Church

About Us

Church Altar

On a typical Sunday morning, St. Michael is home to 270 worshipers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Over 140 children, youth and adults participate in our Sunday school. The congregation is a diverse group of people who are searching for meaning in a confusing world, who yearn to belong and be nourished in the faith, and who seek to serve Christ in the world. Worship services are a testimony of our Lutheran heritage. The population is generally upper to middle class, and comfortable with the turnover associated with the transient nature of many who live in this region. To the local community, St. Michael is regularly referred to as "the friendly church".

St. Michael has experienced constant growth over the past decade and has responded to the associated needs as they have arisen. When the original worship space (now the fellowship hall) could no longer hold the congregation in two services, a new sanctuary was built in 1997. Shortly thereafter, it became evident that another rostered staff person was needed. An Associate Pastor was added to staff in June, 2004. As growth continued, another expansion project that included a 300 seat Fellowship Hall with a larger, state of the art kitchen; administrative offices; remodeling the old fellowship hall into classrooms; and creating a music suite for our music ministry in the current administrative wing.

St. Michael has a proud five-decade history of being faithful people. Our church family recognizes that God has richly blessed His church in this place and is leading us into another phase of growth to better meet the needs of its people as well as the needs of our local community.

Witness/Evangelism

St. Michael actively seeks to share the good news of Christ’s love with the unchurched in our community. Advertising, invitations from church members, location, and community involvement have all aided in the rapid growth of the congregation. The Evangelism Committee has an active follow-up program with all visitors that includes a plate of scrumptous cookies from the "cookie patrol", a variety of casual contacts, and an Inquirer's Brunch several times a year for those interested in learning more about our ministries and joining our church family. Our style is warm, welcoming, and inviting but not pushy.

Service/Social Action

St. Michael has long been concerned with the growing needs of senior citizens living on a fixed income and needing affordable housing in Southern Chester County. As a result, St. Michael founded Lutheran Senior Services of Southern Chester County (LSSSCC) and in partnership with Lutheran Community Services, Wilmington,Delaware, a special ministry was launched - Luther House senior housing complex. Luther House I-III provide affordable housing for senior citizens living on a fixed income under $18,000 annually. Luther House affords St. Michael the opportunity to launch new outreach ministries for seniors through programs and volunteerism.

Outreach ministry continues to grow and be a strong focus of the Social Ministry Committee. We have developed a partnership with Missionary Ventures, which has seen mission teams of St. Michael members traveling to Nicaragua, Peru, Honduras, Jamaica and China. For the past several years a team of church members has planned and raised the awareness of the congregation to the needs of others. This team travels to Latin America for a week of mission and ministry, construction and teaching, with the children and adults of poverty-stricken towns and villages. This ministry has grown each year in size and commitment and has recently led to partnering with other congregations for additional mission trips. Each year this ministry has grown in size and commitment.

St. Michael also has a strong outreach program that works closely with and gives financial assistance to the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, Chester County Migrant Ministries, House of the Sparrow, Camp Dreamcatcher, Wilmington Breakfast Mission, Kennett Community Services, The Needlework Guild of America, Agencies of Lutheran Charities of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, ELCA World Hunger Appeal and ELCA Disaster Relief program, Chester County Prison Ministry, Pocopson Home and Friends Home in Kennett Square.
